Former I-League champions Aizawl FC on Saturday, knocked current Indian Super League champions Chennaiyin FC 5-3 (penalties) in a thrilling pre-quarterfinal encounter of the Super Cup Football tournament.
After being 2-2 at the end of the 120 minutes of the nail-biter that saw Andrei Ionescu score two goals for the I-League outfit while Chennaiyin made a double comeback during the dying moments, with Mailson Alves and Dhanachandra Singh scoring for Chennai.
Aizawl took the lead in the 22nd minute, with Ionescu beating Karanjit Singh with the help of a wicked deflection. Mailson Alves scored the equaliser just a minute before the final whistle, taking the tie to extra time.

Ionescu completed his brace in the extra time, taking Aizawl 2-1 up. But Chennaiyin’s left back Dhanachandra Singh took the game to the penalty shootout with his low drive.
During the tie-breaker, Mohammed Rafi missed the second penalty for Chennaiyin FC whereas Aizawl scored all five spot kicks.
