UEFA dropped a massive shocker as they named Real Madrid midfield maestro and the engine of Croatian national team Luka Modric as the ‘Player of the Year’ ahead of former Los Blancos star and Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese skipper was named the ‘Best Forward’ for his excellent season for Real Madrid but failed to clinch the ‘Player of the Year’. The former Manchester United man was absent from the award ceremony, but super-agent Jorge Mendes, who is also the agent of Cristiano Ronaldo criticised UEFA for not giving the award to his client and reported close friend.

"Football is played across four lines of the pitch and that's where Cristiano won. He scored 15 goals, carrying Real Madrid on his back to winning another Champions League title." On Cristiano not winning the 'Player of the Year' award, the agent went even further and claimed: "It's simply ridiculous, embarrassing even. There's no doubt who the winner should be, the one who is the best in his position," said Jorge Mendes as quoted by Record.

However, the super-agent accepts the fact that the Croatian is the best midfielder but thinks UEFA should have handed the award to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Luka Modric was central to the success of Real Madrid last season and was the brain behind the ticking of Croatian national football team in the 2018 FIFA World Cup with a series of brilliant performances as they advanced till the finals only to lose it against France, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal were knocked out at the quarter-final stage.
