U-17 Fifa World Cup: MPs promote football at Parliament House

The Members of Parliament on Tuesday reached the house with a football in a bid to promote the sport in India. The Speaker of Parliament on Monday had directed all the MPs to promote football.

Union sports ministry had launched ‘Mission XI million’ to encourage children to play football and the approach is to work with school principals and sports teachers and encourage and incentivise them to make children play football games on a regular basis.

Union sports minister Vijay Goel said, “It is not just the stadiums and grounds that need to be built. With the FIFA U-17 World Cup being held in India in October this year, we are building our infrastructure and showcasing our ability to organise and execute global sporting events.”

Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel while talking to NewsNationTv said that his ministry distributed football to all the MPs on Monday. He added that U-17 FIFA World cup matches scheduled in Delhi, may be in jeopardy due to high level of pollution in the capital city.

India is hosting U-17 FIFA World Cup 2017 in October. The tournament will start in New Delhi and Navi Mumbai with the first double headers being held on 6 October.

The quarter-finals will be in Goa, Guwahati, Kochi and Kolkata, while Guwahati and Navi Mumbai will host the semi-finals. The final of the FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 will be held in Kolkata’s iconic Salt Lake Stadium.
