Real Madrid fended off a spirited challenge from city rival Atletico Madrid to win their semifinal clash 4-2 on aggregate and march onto the finals of the UEFA Champions league against Italian side Juventus.
Real who started the second leg semis with a 3 goal cushion were put on the defensive early in the game as Atletico Madrid went ahead with a two-goal lead courtesy Saul Niguez header and Antoine Griezmann’s penalty, but Isco notched in the 42nd minute to dampen their hopes of a comeback.
Real have now sent Atletico out of the competition in four consecutive seasons, including the dramatic 2014 and 2016 finals. Real Madrid could become the first team to retain the Champions League when they take on Juventus in the final in Cardiff on June 3.
