New Delhi:

Ever since the ODIs went into coloured, retro clothing since the Kerry Packer series, fans of Indian cricket have seen the team sport the blue jersey. From the light blue jersey in 1985 to the Navy Blue retro jersey of 1992 to the sea blue from the early 90s till 2019, India has always sported the blue jersey when it came to ODIs. Thus, the team was called the ‘Men in Blue’. However, in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, the Indian fans might have to get accustomed to seeing their team play in a different colour. In football, there is a different jersey for home and away fixtures. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has apparently taken inspiration from football and are planning to implement this in the 2019 edition.

According to a report in the New Indian Express, India might sport the Orange Colour jersey for their away fixture against England in Birmingham on June 30. Since England’s jersey is the same light blue shade reminiscent of their 1992 World Cup campaign, India might sport the Orange jersey. The Express report stated that India has chosen orange as an away kit. The yet-to-be-released kit will see India wear a darker blue in the front, with orange dominating the sleeves and the back. The ICC has planned to introduce the concept of home and away kits, which is already in practice in football.

The same situation confronts South Africa and Bangladesh in their games against Pakistan.

Since Pakistan has been designated as the host country in their games against the Proteas and Bangladesh, they will wear their standard green jersey for the entire tournament. However, South Africa will have to sport green and yellow jersey while Bangladesh might potentially sport a green and red jersey. Pakistan will take on South Africa on June 23 in Lord’s while they will take on Bangladesh at the same venue on July 5.

India might encounter a similar situation when they face Afghanistan on June 22 and Sri Lanka on July 6 in Leeds. However, India will play with the blue jersey as they are the home team with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan potentially playing with a different shade.
