In a marquee clash between India and England at Edgbaston in Birmingham, the host-England is off to a sensational start. After winning the toss on a batting friendly wicket, Jonny Bairstow was joined with his old counterpart Jason Roy, who missed a few league games due to a hamstring tear. The English skipper Eoin Morgan said at the toss that bringing half-fit Jason Roy was a tactical change as the team look to stay in the competition and play the knockouts.
With this, England started the innings well with both Bairstow and Roy seeing the new ball well and eventually hammering the opposition bowlers all-around the ground. The Indian team was put under pressure early in the innings which even affected their Decision Review System (DRS) call as well. In the 11th over, skipper introduced prolific all-rounder Hardik Pandya into the attack.
Hardik Pandya started the over well, and on the fifth ball, he bowled a short of a length delivery to Jason Roy which was going outside leg. Roy was using his feet, attempting a slashing pull, the ball past close to the gloves. Eventually, there was a huge appeal for caught behind, mainly by the bowler. Dhoni did appeal but didn't look sure. However, Aleem Dar, the on-field umpire signalled it as a wide.
Seeing this, Indian skipper Virat Kohli was curious too to send the case upstairs but Dhoni insisted not to take the review. However, the replay showed there was a spike on UltraEdge. It was off the gloves. India lost an opportunity to get Roy out.
In process, the openers went onto register a 160-run stand and Roy, who was batting on 21 then, scored sixteenth ODI fifty and added 45 runs before getting out to Kuldeep Yadav.
