Virat Kohli was having a brilliant day in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 clash against Pakistan in Manchester. Rohit Sharma’s 24th century and third in the World Cup had put India on course for a massive total. KL Rahul blasted a fifty and Indian skipper Virat Kohli joined in the fun with his 51st century. When he glanced a short ball from Hasan Ali to the long leg fence for a boundary, he went past 57 runs and also became the fastest to 11000 runs in ODIs, achieving it in just his 222nd innings, 54 quicker than the previous mark set by Sachin Tendulkar.
Kohli was looking in great touch for a century but a 40-minute rain delay stalled India’s momentum as they looked to post a total in excess of 350. However, on 77, Kohli was facing Mohammad Amir when the bowler bowled a pacy bouncer on middle stump. Kohli aimed for the pull and he missed it. There was a light appeal from Sarfaraz Ahmed and it seemed a routine appeal. However, to everyone’s surprise, Kohli walked even when umpire Marais Erasmus did not raise the finger.
Kohli walked back to the dressing room and there, he realised the horror of his mistake. Replays showed that there was no edge and there was no spike at all on Real Time Snicko (RTS). The bat was nowhere close to the ball and when Kohli spotted the replay, he was furious and admonished himself in the dressing room. India managed to reach 335/6 against Pakistan in Manchester and Sarfaraz Ahmed's side would have to achieve the highest run-chase in World Cup history.
The consistency of Kohli is remarkable. In October 2018, when he had played 205 innings, he had reached 10000 runs during the series against West Indies. Eight months later and 17 innings later, Kohli blasted a further 1000 runs as he continued to enhance his reputation as the ultimate run-making machine in the world.
Kohli is already the fastest to 8000, 9000 and 10,000 runs in ODIs and he added yet another feather to his cap with his entry into the 11000. Rohit reached his milestone by cutting Shadab to the deep point fence for a single to bring up his century off just 85 balls. Rohit continued to rake in the records as he broke Virat Kohli's mark of the highest individual score in World Cups against Pakistan, which was 107 in the 2015 World Cup in Adelaide.
Pakistan has never won a World Cup contests against India ever since both teams started playing in 1992. In Sydney, India won their first encounter while they knocked Pakistan out in the quarterfinal of the 1996 World Cup. In 1999, they defeated Pakistan in the super six stages while in 2003, they registered a win in the league stages. In 2011, they knocked Pakistan out of the tournament with a win in the semi-final while in 2015, they won by a big margin in Adelaide.
