The IPL 2019 clash between Delhi Capitals and the Kolkata Knight Riders witnessed an absolute humdinger with the match being decided on the super over. Kolkata Knight Riders notched up 185/8 thanks to a blazing 62 off 28 balls from Andre Russell and an attacking fifty from Dinesh Karthik. In response, Prithvi Shaw slammed a brilliant 99 and was out when Delhi Capitals were nearing victory. Kuldeep Yadav had the task of defending six runs in the final over and the bowler missed a run-out opportunity. Needing two runs off the final ball, Colin Ingram mistimed a sweep and was run-out in attempting a second and the match ended in a tie.

In the super over, Kolkata Knight Riders chose to bowl with Prasidh Krishna and despite getting hit for one boundary by Shreyas Iyer, the bowler held his own and conceded 10 runs in the super over. When it was the turn of Delhi Capitals to bowl, Kagiso Rabada stepped up and he had to bowl to the dangerous Russell. After conceding a boundary first ball, Rabada bowled a dot ball and then cleaned up Russell with a brilliant 147 kmph yorker which uprooted middle stump. The ball swung momentum towards the Delhi Capitals and despite Dinesh Karthik paddling a low full toss to fine leg, Kolkata Knight Riders lost the game by three runs in the super over. The total of 11 is the lowest-ever defended in the super over in the history of the IPL.

RELATED

The tied match between Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders was the eighth instance when the match was decided in the super over. The first tied match was between Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders in Cape Town in 2009. When both teams ended tied on 150, Kolkata Knight Riders smashed 15 runs with Chris Gayle hitting three boundaries off Kamran Khan. In response, Yusuf Pathan launched Ajantha Mendis for two sixes and a four as Rajasthan Royals won the first-ever super over.

The next super over was between Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab at the MA Chidambaram stadium in 2010. Irfan Pathan’s final over yielded nine runs as Chennai Super Kings ended on 136/7, level with Kings XI Punjab. Juan Theron, who took four wickets in the match, bowled the super over and picked up both the wickets as Suresh Raina smashed a six to give Kings XI Punjab a target of 10. Mahela Jawaywardene hit a six off Muttiah Muralitharan but he fell and it required a Yuvraj Singh special to give Kings XI Punjab their first win against Chennai Super Kings.

The next super over was between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013 and Sunrisers, boosted by Hanuma Vihari, emerged victorious. In the same year, Royal Challengers Bangalore were once again part of the super over this time against Delhi Daredevils and they came out on top this time, defending 15 runs in Ravi Rampaul’s over. Kolkata Knight Riders once again squared off against Rajasthan Royals in the one-over eliminator during the 2014 IPL clash in Abu Dhabi and just like the result five years ago, Rajasthan Royals emerged victorious.

In the 2015 IPL clash between Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab in Ahmedabad, the winning streak of the Royals ended when Kings XI Punjab won the super over. In the 2017 IPL, the game between Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions ended in a tie and it needed a special over from Jasprit Bumrah to -give Mumbai Indians the win. The Delhi Capitals vs Kolkata Knight Riders tie was the first time that a game was tied at Kotla. If most of the matches in IPL 2019 live up to the kind of hype the match delivered, we could be in for a thrilling tournament.
