IPL 2018: Gautam Gambhir steps down as captain of Delhi Daredevils

Gautam Gambhir, who was struggling with poor form, on Wednesday stepped down as the captain of his IPL franchise Delhi Daredevils.

Commenting on his decision, Gambhir said that he was not contributing to the team and being the "leader of the ship" he took the decision.

“It was my decision. I haven't contributed enough to the team. I had to take the responsibility being the leader of the ship. I feel it was the right time,” said Gambhir.

Delhi Daredevils lost five of the six matches it has played so far in the Indian Premier league 2018 and was currently ranked last in the points table.

Gambhir, who returned to Delhi after a long seven years stint with Kolkata Knight Riders, started the season on a high and scored 55 runs to the first match against Kings XI Punjab.

However, after the first match, Gambhir looked a little out of confidence and could manage to score only 30 runs in next five innings.

After Gambhir’s resignation, Delhi’s in-form player Shreyas Iyer will lead the Daredevils.

"I want to thank the management & my coaches for appointing me as the captain of the team. It is a great honor for me: Shreyas Iyer on being appointed as the new captain of Delhi Daredevils," Iyer said after being elevated to the skipper's post.
