The schedule for the upcoming 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League is finally out. The tournament will begin on March 29 and will culminate in the final potentially on May 24 at the Wankhede stadium. Mumbai Indians, the four-time champions of the Indian Premier League, will open the tournament and their opponents will be three-time champions Chennai Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have won a total of seven Indian Premier League titles combined and these two teams will kickoff the 2020 blockbuster. This edition of the Indian Premier League will be important as it is being played with the World T20 beginning in October in Australia.
The IPL 2020 will see only six double-headers being played in the entire edition. All the double-headers will be played on a Sunday. Thus, the dates of the double headers are April 5, April 12, April 19, April 26, May 3 and May 10. It is important to note that the knock-out stages of the Indian Premier League have not yet been announced but the tradition of the IPL is that the team that wins the tournament, the venue is chosen as the final for the next edition.
Thus, with Mumbai winning the title in 2019, the Wankhede stadium will host the final on May 24. The final league game will be between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in Bengaluru. All the games will be played at 8 PM while the first double-headers will take place at 4 PM. One hopes that the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League is as dramatic as the 2019 edition which saw a thrilling finale.
The 2019 final, which took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium in Hyderabad witnessed Mumbai Indians square off in an epic final against Chennai Super Kings. Mumbai Indians chose to bat and they were in trouble at 101/5 with Deepak Chahar taking 3/26. Some lusty hitting from Kieron Pollard, who blasted 41 off 25 balls, helped Mumbai Indians reach 149/8. In response, Shane Watson blasted 80 off 59 balls but Chennai Super Kings suffered a collapse with Jasprit Bumrah taking 2/14 in four overs. Lasith Malinga, though, conceded 20 runs in his third over and Krunal Pandya also conceded 20 runs with Watson hitting him for three sixes as Chennai Super Kings needed nine runs in the final over. With five runs needed off three balls, Watson was run-out and when Shardul Thakur took two runs, Chennai Super Kings needed two runs off the final ball. However, Malinga bowled the slow yorker and Thakur missed the swipe across the line to be trapped plumb in front as Mumbai Indians won the title with a one-run win.
