New Delhi:

Prithvi Shaw was making magnificent progress for Delhi Capitals in the game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Feroz Shah Kotla. The India Under-19 captain was batting like a dream with some crisp strokes and Delhi Capitals were on course to overhaul Kolkata Knight Riders’ score of 185/8, which was possible primarily due to Andre Russell’s 62 off 28 and Dinesh Karthik’s 50. However, on 99, Shaw miscued a slow short ball from New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson and the top-edge was taken by Dinesh Karthik. Shaw was distraught on missing the century and Kolkata Knight Riders dragged the match into the super over which was won by three runs by Delhi Capitals thanks to Kagiso Rabada’s brilliant spell.

When Shaw was dismissed on 99, the Mumbai batsman joined a special list of batsmen who were dismissed one short of a century. Shaw became the third player after Suresh Raina and Virat Kohli to be dismissed on 99 or remaining unbeaten on 99. Raina remains the first and only one to remain unbeaten on 99 during Chennai Super Kings’ clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International stadium in Uppal in 2013. Heading into the final over of Chennai Super Kings’ innings, Raina was on 86 and he reached closer to his century by pulling a short ball from Darren Sammy to the deep midwicket fence.

On the final ball of the innings, Raina thumped a full toss for a couple but the bowler overstepped and it gave the left-hander a chance to reach his century with a six. However, Raina managed just a boundary and he ended up unbeaten on 99 as Chennai Super Kings reached 223/3 to win the match by 77 runs.

The second instance involved Virat Kohli in the game between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils at the Feroz Shah Kotla in 2013. Royal Challengers Bangalore batted first and they were boosted by a splendid knock from AB de Villiers and Kohli. While de Villiers blasted 32 off 17 balls, Kohli was on 76 heading into the final over bowled by Umesh Yadav. After a couple in the first ball, Kohli whacked a boundary to deep midwicket and drove a full ball to the deep extra cover fence.

Kohli showed his class by walloping two sixes straight down the ground for two massive sixes and on the final ball, the current Indian skipper hit a full ball to point but when he turned back for the second, he was run-out for 99. The runs scored in the end mattered as Royal Challengers Bangalore won the match by four runs.
