BWF World Championship: PV Sindhu goes down fighting to Okuhara, settles for Silver

Japanese star shuttler Nozomi Okuhara defeated India's PV Sindhu in a thriller women’s singles final of the BWF World Badminton Championships in Glasgow. Sindhu won the Silver medal.

It was a very close contest and went down to three games. Okuhara started on a positive note and won the first game by 21-19 but Sindhu fought back hard and won the second set by 22-20.

In the third penultimate game, Japanese Shuttler took early four point lead with score 5-1. But Sindhu again came back strongly and was leading 19-17. Nozomi then accelerated her game and took the Championship point at 21-20.

With her last point, Japan's Okuhara won the third game by22-20 and the Championship Gold by 21-19, 20-22 and 22-20. 

In a sport dominated by Chinese, Indonesians and South Koreans for long, Japan played second fiddle for a very long time winning silvers and bronze at World Championships/ Olympics. Okuhara is their first ever gold medallist at the BWF World Championships

However, the powerful performance of Indian Shuttler PV Sindhu didn't go unnoticed and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her for showing the Indian mettle in the court.

"Well played @Pvsindhu1! We are proud of your game at the @2017BWC finals. Congratulations," Modi tweeted.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi also tweeted to congratulate Sindhu for her wonderful match performance.

"Well played PV . You made the country proud. Congratulations," Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

Earlier, Nozomi Okuhara stormed into the finals after defeating another Indian Shuttler Shaina Nehwal 12-21, 21-17, 21-10. After losing first round, Nozomi fought back hard and dominated the next two sets to crash Nehwal's golden dream. 

Okuhara defeated Carolina Marin, Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu in a row to clinch the title.
