Portugal defeated France 1-0 in a nail biting thriller to claim their first European Championship – and first major trophy – after substitute Eder scored a brilliant goal in extra time at Stade de France in Euro Cup 2016 Final.

Star player Cristiano Ronaldo failed to survive the game beyond half time as he became victim of a heavy challenge by Dimitri Payet and went off field due to injury. He returned to the touchline to see Lille striker Eder settle the game with a low 25-yard strike at Stade de France.

The victory ended Portugal's run of 10 straight defeats against France, who had eliminated them in the semi-finals at Euro 1984, Euro 2000 and the 2006 World Cup.

Mixed responses were registered from fans of both sides. Some clashes were also reported across the places. In a major French police arrested around 40 people for violence and other offences before and after France's defeat to Portugal in the Euro 2016 final in Paris, police have said.

Police used tear gas and rounded up supporters who pelted them with bottles at the foot of the Eiffel Tower after they were refused entry to the fan zone, which was closed after it was packed to its 90,000 capacity, Paris police said.

Other arrests took place outside the Stade de France where the match was played. They were for public disorder offences.
