Indian Olympics Association (IOA) on Tuesday nullified the decision of Abhay Chautala and Suresh Kalmadi's appointment as life presidents. According to reports on ANI, IOA president N Ramachandran said that there was no resolution passed for the same in Chennai AGM.
The Association came under fire for appointing scam-tainted Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Chautala as life presidents for IOA.
Soon after the decision, Sports Ministry had earlier suspended the sports body for making the controversial appointments. Kalmadi had earlier served as IOA president.
A top official at IOA confirmed that the appointments of Kalmadi and Chautala has been declared "null and void" in order to get the recognition of the Sports Ministry and also to avoid any possible action from the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The sports body had named Kalmadi and Chautala to the honorary positions at the IOA's Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Chennai on December 27, but the Olympic body was forced to reverse its decision after it was opposed by a majority of IOA members.
Sports Minister Vijay Goel had expressed his shock over the statement saying that, “We are shocked at the resolution passed by the IOA to make Suresh kalmadi and Abhay Chautala Life Presidents of the IOA which is totally unacceptable to us as both of them are facing serious corruption and criminal charges.”
