WWE Battleground witnessed the shocking return of The Great Khali who interfered in the main event match at the smackdown exclusive pay per view. The main event saw current WWE Champion Jinder Mahal successfully defend his championship against Randy Orton in the Punjabi prison match.
The legend killer Randy Orton was about to win the match when Khali choked him, allowing Jinder to retain the championship. This was Khali's first appearance in three years as he had left the company back in 2014 when his contract expired. Many fans were left wondering why WWE brought back the former world heavyweight champion.
According to reputed wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer, the wrestler was called back to solidify the championship reign of Mahal . WWE believed the association with Khali would have a nice rub off on Jinder Mahal, who was made champion because the company wanted to expand their reach in India.
Khali gained the status of a national hero in the country after he became the first Indian to win the world heavyweight championship. The feeling within WWE is that Jinder has not been able to create a mark amongst the Indian audience and Khali can endorse him as a top champion in the country.
After his contract with WWE ended, The Great Khali established his own training academy and promotion, named Continental Wrestling Entertainment ( CWE).
As of now, it is not clear whether he will stick around in WWE for a longer period or this was an one-off appearance.
