In a tightly fought contest, India’s ace shuttler PV Sindhu on Thursday defeated Hong Kong's Cheung Ngan Yi 19-21, 23-21, 21-17 to enter quarter finals of World Badminton Championships.

After losing the first game Sindhu fought back to win the second game. The third and deciding game was also a close one, however, Olympics silver medalist scored quick points to seal the game 21-17 consequently winning the contest.

Earlier in the day, India's top shuttler Kidambi Srikanth on Thursday qualified for singles quarter-finals, while the mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy lost in the pre-quarterfinals. 

Earlier in the tournament, Rio Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu notched up an easy victory over Korea's Kim Hyo Min to progress to the pre-quarterfinals.
