Yuki Bhambri who is India’s top seeded singles Tennis player notched his maiden win in ATP Masters 1000 tournament on Friday. The 25-year-old beat Nicolas Mahut 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open.

The match which lasted for an hour and 41 minutes saw Bhambri putting up a strong performance to secure a spot in the second round where he will take on ninth seed Lucas Pouille.

The 2009 Australian Open Junior Championship winner came back from behind in both the sets and clawed his way to seal the win against French player.

Yuki Bhambri who entered the tournament through qualifiers had 64% of his first serves in and a total of 78 points while his opponent could only score 62.

Bhambri took advantage of Nicholos’s poor serving game and applied pressure on the Frenchman who faced a break point each time he was on serve during the second set. The win had bootsed the confidence of the young Indian player who might look to start the season on a high note and advance to the third round.

For the uninitiated, the Delhi-born player outsmarted Ramkumar Ramanathan to qualify for the Masters event, his first 1000 series to tournament in nine years. Yuki had played at a Masters event in 2009 at Miami.
