New Delhi:

Lewis Hamilton stormed to a record fifth victory at the British Grand Prix after taking four in a row at the circuit as Sebastian Vettel faced problems in the last lap. In the process, he also equalled Jim Clark and Alain Prost on five wins at Silverstone.

Hamilton's victory cut his deficit to Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel to just one point in the championship as the German suffered a front-left tyre failure when running third with two laps to go, dropping to seventh.

His Ferrari team-mate Kimi Raikkonen was poised to finish second but he also suffered a puncture in the closing moments to promote Valtteri Bottas one spot as Mercedes completed a remarkable one-two finish. Raikkonen recovered to finish third.

Hamilton's home crowd was ecstatic as they welcomed their champion as podium celebrations began.

"The support has been incredible this weekend," he said. "I am so proud I could do this for you all. Now the plan is to win the championship."

Earlier on Saturday, Hamilton had stormed to a provisional fifth Silverstone pole of his career after a dazzling performance during a rain-affected qualifying session in the British Grand Prix.

The Briton had thrilled home fans with a devastating quickest lap of 1min 26.600sec to finish 0.547 sec clear of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen, although Hamilton was under investigation for potential impeding.
