Stan Wawrinka stunned the world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the finals of US Open to win the title. Stan beat the Serb 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 7-5, 6-3 in a tight match which took 4 hours to complete.
Djokovic had an easy walk to the finals as two opponents retired whereas one gave him easy walk over. He was on court for just under nine hours in total, half of the 17 hours and 50 minutes Wawrinka had played.
This was 31 old Swiss player’s third Grand Slam title in three consecutive years. The first two being 2014 Australian Open and 2015 French Open.
Playing on a court that had the date 9/11/2016 inscribed in it, Wawrinka paid tribute to the victims and those affected by the terrorist attacks on America 15 years ago.
It is only the second time in the 89 grand slam matches Djokovic has played as the world No. 1 where he has been beaten after claiming the first set.
Djokovic praised his Swiss opponent for being the better of the two.
