New Delhi:

Google News surprised its readers on Wednesday as it appeared in a completely new look with minimalist approach. The 14-year-old Google news reader looks neat and clean now.

The Home Page of Google News now shows three sections that are placed at the centre – a top headlines list, a local list, and a personalized “For You” section which has stories as per your interest areas that you’ve preselected.

Google has done this overhaul to stay competitive with mobile-first news readers such as Apple News and the built-in news delivery mechanisms of Facebook and Twitter.

Google has also borrowed some elements from its mobile app and search engine design philosophy, transitioning the news reader to a card-based interface.

The story now gets its own clutter-free space with related links. The photos are now prominent and key information like article source, headline, and publish time have been put in place.

“Every day people come to Google News for a trusted view of the world. It’s there for everything from moments of political change to gripping sports events to daily local news,” wrote Anand Paka, Google News’ product manager, in a blog post published. “To make news more accessible and easier to navigate, we redesigned the desktop website with a renewed focus on facts, diverse perspectives, and more control for users.”
