Android Oreo: Google unveils its new software update

Search engine giant Google unveiled the eighth version of Android named Oreo on Monday. The updated software, which has been available for the last few months in developer beta, will be available for smartphones and tablets soon.

The first ones to get Android O will be those using Google devices, like the Nexus 5X or 6P, and the Google Pixel and Pixel XL. Updates for other smartphones and tablets will rely on handset manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei and OnePlus, with a few planning to update certain devices to Oreo.

The update sports several new features, including support for picture-in-picture video, notification dots, more privacy controls and a redesigned set of emojis.

Android Oreo mainly focuses on battery life, speed and security, with greater control of apps the primary feature. Google uncloaked a statue of the newest dessert-themed update at 14th Street Park in Manhattan on Monday.
