While uploading images on Thursday, you may have noticed that both Facebook and Instagram began suffering intermittent outages. It is to be noted that the popular social media websites including Instagram and Facebook crashed on Thursday evening in India and around the world. Do not worry as the service has been restored. Yes, you read it right. In a statement, Facebook said that it has restored service following an outage that hindered access to the social platform and its other apps such as Instagram.
Facebook said, "Earlier today, people may have experienced trouble accessing Facebook's family of apps. The issue has since been resolved, we are back to 100 percent for everyone and we're sorry for any inconvenience." Facebook further blamed "an issue in one of our central software systems" for snarling connectivity for several hours.
According to Down Detector, the issues started at around 14:15 GMT, and are affecting users across the UK. However, WhatsApp which is the other major part of Facebook did not appear to be affected by the outage.
Recently, Facebook deleted 5.4 billion fake accounts already this year, in a sign of a persistent battle on social media against manipulation and disinformation. "We have improved our ability to detect and block attempts to create fake, abusive accounts," the internet firm said in its latest transparency report.
The social network has invested heavily in finding and taking down accounts crafted to deceive people about where information is originating, particular when spread as part of coordinated campaigns with political or social agendas.
It is worth mentioning here that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp all suffered their worst ever outages earlier this year in March, with problems that were eventually attributed to a “server configuration change” persisting for more than 24 hours.
