Beginning today, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has implemented the revised mobile number portability (MNP) rules. The process which allows mobile subscribers to switch operators while retaining their mobile numbers. The new rules suggest a number must be ported within 3-5 working days, which earlier was extended to 15 days.
According to new rules, unique porting code (UPC) will be generated for a subscriber who requests for MNP and will be generated only post validation of the subscriber's account. The code should be issued to the user within 5 minutes of placing the request.
How to port your number?
- Send an SMS with the word ‘PORT’ followed by a space and your 10-digit mobile number which you want to be ported, to 1900.
- A Unique Porting Code (UPC) will be generated.
- You will receive an SMS on the same phone the porting request message was sent from.
- Get in touch with the mobile service provider you want to port to, and fill the Customer Acquisition Form (CAF).
- You are entitled to pay Rs 6.46 as the porting fees, every time you wish to port your mobile number to another network.
TRAI said, "There should not be any pending contractual obligations to be fulfilled by the subscriber as per the exit clause provided in the subscriber agreement.”
UPC will be valid for four days for all the places except Jammu and Kashmir, Assam and North East where it can take up to 30 days.
