Bondi Beach shooting: Who is Ahmed Al Ahmed? Bystander hailed as 'Hero' for disarming Sydney shooter

Bondi Beach shooting: A man has been hailed as a “hero” by people in Australia for the way he tackled a gunman during a mass shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach. The attack is said to be the deadliest in the country in years. Footage going viral on social media shows the unarmed man tackling the shooter while shots were being fired at civilians. His actions are believed to have saved many lives.

The 15-second clip shows the man first taking cover near parked cars and then moving in from behind the attacker, grabbing him by the neck and snatching his gun. He can then be seen forcing the shooter to the ground and pointing the same rifle back at him.

Who is Ahmed Al Ahmed?

The individual has been named as Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, who works as a fruit seller. Reports say he was hit by two bullets during the incident. Speaking to 7News, a relative identified as Mustapha confirmed he is Ahmed’s cousin.

"He's in hospital and we don't know exactly what's going on inside," he said. "We do hope he will be fine. He's a hero 100 per cent," he added.

According to reports, Ahmed, who was scheduled for surgery later that night, had no experience with guns. Social media users praised his bravery and quick thinking, while Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also described him as a “hero”.

The shooting incident targeting the Jewish community during a Hanukkah event at Sydney's Bondi Beach left at least 15 people dead and 29 others, including a child, injured. According to police, the shooters involved in the incident were father and son.

While the 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram, was killed at the scene, his 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, was in critical condition in hospital.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the national security committee was convened immediately after the attack.

“There has been a devastating terrorist incident at Bondi at the Hanukkah by the sea celebration. This is a targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah, which should be a day of joy, a celebration of faith, an act of evil, anti-Semitism, terrorism that has struck the heart of our nation,” he said.

“An attack on Jewish Australians is an attack on every Australian and every Australian. There is no place for this hate, violence and terrorism in our nation. Let me be clear we will eradicate it,” he added.
