Thirty-four US troops suffered traumatic brain injuries or concussion in the recent Iranian air strike on 8 January targeting a military base in Iraq housing American personnel, the Pentagon said on Friday.
"Thirty-four total members have been diagonosed with concussions and TBI (traumatic brain injury)," Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman told reporters.
US President Donald Trump had initially said that no Americans were injured in the strike on the Ain al-Asad base in western Iraq earlier this month although authorities later reported that 11 troops were injured.
The Pentagon spokesman, Jonathan Hoffman, said on Friday that eight service members who had been previously transported to Germany had been moved to the United States. Hoffman said the service members were transported earlier Friday and would receive treatment at either Walter Reed military hospital or their home bases.
The strike was a reprisal for the US drone strike assassination of the Iranian General Qassem Suleimani.
