Nearly forty-seven people have been killed and dozens injured after a blaze tore through an Indonesian fireworks factory, police said on Thursday.

“There are 103 workers in total working for this factory, 43 are injured and being treated in three hospitals, the remains of 23 victims have been found,” Nico Afinta, director of general crime at Jakarta Police, told Kompas TV.

Police said there were 103 workers at the factory in the city of Tangerang, 25 kilometres west of the capital Jakarta.

Police said that an electrical fault is believed to have caused the explosion, however, they are still investigating the cause.

The factory is in a densely populated area of Tangerang in the province of Baten.
