6.2 undersea quake strikes central Indonesia; no tsunami threat

A mild earthquake of magnitude 6.2 struck off the Indonesian island of Lombok on Thursday. The quake, at a depth of 29 km, hit at a distance of 234 km from Lombok. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, however.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," where tectonic plates collide.

On June 5, a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck in the Banda Sea in remote eastern Indonesia, but there was no tsunami warning was issued.

The quake struck at 00:25 am (1625 GMT Sunday) at a depth of 428 kilometres (265 miles), about 300 kilometres from Ambon Island, the US Geological Survey said.
