Aleppo's 7-yr-old Bana Alabed who tweeted a video message to Michelle Obama for help evacuated safely from Syria

Aleppo's seven-year-old girl Bana Alabed who had hogged the limelight by posting live tweets from Syria's war-ravaged city has been evacuated with her family, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) said on Monday.

Aleppo's seven-year-old girl Bana Alabed who had hogged the limelight by posting live tweets from Syria's war-ravaged city has been evacuated with her family, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) said on Monday.

Earlier on Saturday, Bana Alabed and her mother had posted a video message on Twitter to Michelle Obama begging her to save them and innocent citizens from war-torn Aleppo.

On Monday, Ahmad Tarakji (president of the SAMS) tweeted that Bana Alabed has been arrived safely in the countryside of Aleppo province.


Zaher Sahloul, a SAMS relief coordinator, also posted a tweet that Bana was "safe with her family." He also mentioned in his tweet that Bana survived "siege, bombing and apathy."


The 7-year-old young girl had kept a harrowing log of the conflict on her Twitter handle with the help of her mother, Fatemah Alabed.

"Aleppo is a synonym for hell"

Describing the war-ravaged Syrian town of Aleppo as a "synonym for hell", UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said the international community has collectively failed the people of Syria and the carnage there remains a "gaping hole" in the global conscience.

In his last press conference as the UN Secretary-General, Ban delivered stark warnings on two issues at the forefront of international concern--- Syria and South Sudan.

He stated that "the carnage in Syria remains a gaping hole in the global conscience and South Sudan faces a risk of genocide as the country leaders have squandered a peace agreement."

"Aleppo is now a synonym for hell," Ban said, bidding farewell to the UN press corps.


Evacuation in progress

More than 1,000 people were evacuated from the last rebel-held pocket of Syria's Aleppo early today after hours of delay, a medical official said.

"About 20 buses carrying people from Aleppo have arrived" at the staging ground west of the city, said Dr Ahmad Dbis, who heads a team of doctors and volunteers coordinating evacuations.

"There are about 1,200 to 1,300 people here," he said.

More than 30 buses packed with people had waited overnight in freezing temperatures to leave Aleppo under a complex evacuation deal.

The evacuation deal for Aleppo was brokered by regime ally Russia and rebel backer Turkey, and has been overseen by the International Committee for the Red Cross.

UN envoy Staffan de Mistura estimated that as of Thursday around 40,000 civilians and perhaps as many as 5,000 opposition fighters remained in Aleppo's rebel enclave.
