New Delhi:

A US Air Force F-16 fighter jet crashed near the German town of Zemmer-Rodt on Tuesday, Air Force and German officials said. The pilot ejected safely and was recovered with minor injuries, the Star and Stripes website reported quoting official statement from Spangdahlem Air Base. The aircraft, which was on a routine training flight, was assigned to the 480th Fighter Squadron, 52nd Fighter Wing, at Spangdahlem, the statement said.

According to the report, several people called the German police in Trier at about 3:15 p.m. to report that a plane had crashed, the police said in a statement. The plane went down in an uninhabited area, a few miles south of Spangdahlem and north of the city of Trier, the statement said. Police cordoned off the area and shut down several roads.

A large amount of jet fuel is said to have spilled out at the site of the crash and a search is underway to retrieve parts of the jet in the woodland near to Zemmer, a small town between Spangdahlem and Trier. Immediately following the incident many roads were blocked off, aided by military police and the local fire service before officials from the US air base "took over," said the fire service, reported Deutsche Welle.
