President Donald Trump was on Thursday impeached for abuse of power by the US House of Representatives. While 230 representatives voted in favour of President Donald Trump’s impeachment, 197 stood against it in the Democratic-majority House. Today’s votes set up a likely January trial in the Republican-controlled Senate. Interestingly, the US president has become the third occupant of the White House in American history to be impeached.
It is to be noted that the historic vote followed a daylong debate on whether President Donald Trump violated his oath in pressuring Ukraine to damage a political opponent. Opening the House debate on Trump’s impeachment, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, "It is tragic that the president's reckless actions, make impeachment necessary." “He gave us no choice. The president is an ongoing threat to our national security, and the integrity of our elections, the basis of our democracy,” Pelosi added.
Whereas, during the debate on Trump’s impeachment, Democrats said that they had no choice but to formally charge the president.
Ahead of the vote, Adam Schiff, the lawmaker who headed the impeachment inquiry, said, "What is at risk here is the very idea of America."
It is worth mentioning here that back in August, a whistle blower blew opened the scandal of Trump pressuring Ukraine's president to investigate his opponent Joe Biden.
According to a report of Al Jazeera, on July 25, Trump made a telephone call to Ukrain President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, and his son, Hunter, who was had served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company.
