At least eight people were killed and 22 others were injured after a bus, which had been hijacked in east China's Fujian Province, crashed into pedestrians on the street on Tuesday afternoon, according to XinhuaA suspect, who had a knife, has been detained and an investigation is underway, state television CGTN reported.

A video footage posted online shows police personnel are wrestling with the attacker on a street as a crowd gathers around him. A police officer is said to be among those killed.

Chinese media said the attacker hijacked a public bus and used it to mow down his victims at about 3.20pm local time. Eyewitnesses said the man was carrying a blood-stained knife when he walked off the bus and was tackled. The Police said a suspect was in custody.

"Eight dead and 22 injured after a hijacked bus crashes into pedestrians,"  state television CGTN tweeted.

The attacker was not identified by the police. "The 48-year-old male suspect is believed to have had a personal grudge with a community official," the channel said, citing local police's primary investigation.

His motive for the attack is yet to be established. China in recent years has witnessed such attacks, which were attributed to disgruntled people. Random knife attackers in the past have targeted kindergarten schools in several cities.
