At least 79 school students were kidnapped by unidentified people in the city of Bamenda in northwest Cameroon early on Monday, according to initial reports.
News agency Reuters reported that no organisation has claimed responsibility so far for the abduction. In the region, the separatists have imposed curfews and closed down schools as part of their protest against President Paul Biya’s French-speaking government.
Local reports suggest gunshots has been heard in the area with the situation described as 'very tense'. Authorities of the North West region said security forces have launched an operation to rescue the children.
