British PM Theresa May wins confidence vote in UK Parliament

New Delhi:

British Prime Minister Theresa May, who lost the parliamentary majority in the in recently concluded elections has on Thursday won the confidence vote with support from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

May's Conservative Party was running a minority govt since June 8 election debacle but managed to pass the Queen’s Speech by a majority of 14. The House of Commons voted by 323 to 309 to approve last week's Queen's Speech, which laid out the government's agenda for the next two years

Earlier in June, Theresa May’s gamble of early elections backfired and she had lost her parliamentary majority which created uncertainties as the country was preparing to negotiate its departure from the European Union.

However, after losing the majority May remained confident and she had said “my resolve is the same that as it has been. Whatever the results, the Conservative party will remain the party of stability.”
