New Delhi :
In an attempt to put 'America First' US President Donald Trump intends to introduce a highly aggressive immigration policy which is based on merit and could benefit Indian skilled workers.
Under this system the highly skilled Indian workers will not be able to sponsor their extended families. The scheme is viewed by many to benefit Indian professionals from the IT sector.
Earlier Trump had called to phase out Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) programme and termed it unconstitutional.
In support of his merit based immigration system Doanld Trump argued that it would prioritise immigration based on skills over extended family-based chain migration.
"Decades of low-skilled immigration has suppressed wages, fueled unemployment and strained federal resources," he rued. The administration proposes establishing a merit-based immigration system that protects US workers and taxpayers, and ending chain migration, to promote financial success and assimilation for newcomers, he said.
Trump proposed ending extended-family chain migration by limiting family-based green cards to spouses and minor children and replace it with a merit-based system that prioritises skills and economic contributions over family connections.
