Famous Qawwali singer Amjad Sabri was on Wednesday shot dead in Karachi by two unidentified gunmen, reports said. The 45-year-old singer was travelling along with an associate in a car in Liquatabad 10 area when attackers opened fire at their vehicle.
Sabri died on his way to hospital. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The singer was shot thrice – twice in the head and once on the ear. Sabri has a million followers in Pakistan but was under attack from hard-line Islamists.
Sabri was the son of renowned Qawwal Ghulam Farid Sabri whose family is famous in the subcontinent for their contribution to the sufi art and mystic poetry. (Read Also:Amjad Sabri shot dead: Qawwali and Sabri Brothers)
Sabri was one of Pakistan’s finest qawwals, known for his soul-stirring renditions of mystic poetry. Some of the most memorable and famous qawwalis of the Sabris were ‘Bhar Do Jholi Meri’, ‘Tajdar-i-Haram’ and ‘Mera Koi Nahin Hai Teray Siwa’.
For his modern style of rendition he was known as the rockstar of Qawwali. What remains to be noted is that His killing comes just two days after the son of the Sindh High Court Chief Justice was kidnapped and it raises serious concern about the security situation in Pakistan’s Karachi.
Opposition politicians train their guns at the ruling government in Pakistan and describe Sabri’s killing as total failure of the provincial government.
No words. This is extremely sad, disturbing and unacceptable specially since he had submitted an application for his protection! #AmjadSabri
