Islamabad-based accountability court judge Mohammad Bashir pronounced the verdict behind closed doors.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) prosecution team chief Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi provided details of the judgement.
“The court sentenced Sharif to 10 years rigorous imprisonment and fined eight million pounds (over USD 10 million). Maryam was given seven years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed two million pounds (over USD 2.6 million) and her husband Muhammad Safdar was awarded one year rigorous imprisonment,†Abbasi told media outside the court.
“I congratulate my all prosecution team... It is a victory of the NAB prosecution,†Abbasi said.
The former Pakistan PM has been in London since the month of June to take care of his ailing wife Kulsoom Nawaz who is undergoing treatment for throat cancer.
The charges on Sharif and his daughter were regarding four London flats that got a mention in the Panama Papers. However, he later denied the ownership but said they were owned by his son Hussain Nawaz in 2006. However, Sharif family admitted that they were staying in the mentioned flats since 1993.
As per the Joint Investigation Team's final report regarding the Panama gate case, the Sharifs had given contradictory statements about their posh flats, as per media reports.
The JIT observed that either Hassan or Hussain or both had lied to hide some facts and hence they could not be given the benefit of doubt, the reports said.
More details to follow.
