Mexico's Juan Pedro Franco, the heaviest man in the world billed at almost 600 kgs (1300 pounds) has been successfully operated upon by surgeon Jose Castadena. The gastric bypass surgery was successfully undertaken according to his doctors in Mexico.
The surgical procedure conducted on Juan Pedro Franco is expected to reduce his weight by half and will most probably be followed up by another surgery, according to his surgeon Jose Castadena.
"The surgery was quite successful. But now we must wait and see how he responds to the (systemic) change. Let's hope everything goes well," Castaneda said.
Castadena further added that the surgery has left Juan “quite delicate†and is being monitored closely.
Franco who had weighed 595 kg at his peak, had to make a lot of preparation for his surgery. To be eligible for the procedure, he had to lose a large amount of his initial weight. He also had to bring his blood pressure and diabetes within expected parameters.
Franco’s motivation and regular progress found favour and the doctors gave the green light for the surgery.  Franco had spent years in bed because of his weight.
When The second surgery, scheduled for most probably in NOVEMBER, is conducted, Franco’s stomach size will be compacted and his intestines will also be modified.
However, Castadena warned that the patient has also to keep improving on the psychological and nutritional fronts. "If that does not happen, the entire thing will fail.†Manuel Uribe who earlier was the world’s heaviest man in 2007 in Mexico at 597kg, died last year.
Egyptian Eman Ahmed Abd El Aty, who is the world’s heaviest woman underwent the same surgical procedure in India recently.
In her case, the doctors gave her a modified diet in her treatment helped her to lose 323 kgs in around 3 months to come down to 177 kgs.Â
