As many as 91 people were killed and scores others injured after a massive earthquake struck Indonesian tourist islands of Lombok on Sunday night. The powerful magnitude 7 earthquake wreaked havoc in Lombok and damaged thousands of building.

The epicentre of the shallow quake was 43 km from West Nusa Tenggara, 10km (6.21 miles) underground. The tremors of the quake were also felt the neighbouring islands of Bali and Gili chain.

As many as 135 aftershocks have been recorded on Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara since Sunday night’s 7-magnitude earthquake, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency of Indonesia reported on Monday morning.

Following the earthquake, the Indonesian government had issued a tsunami warning but lifted it after few hours.

In Asia's one of the most popular holiday destinations Bali, the tremors were felt for several seconds. A video of the earthquake showed people shouting in panic and rushing outside the building.

"They were initially just little shocks but then they started to get bigger and bigger and people started to shout 'earthquake', then all the staff panicked and rushed out of the building," BBC quoted one of the eyewitnesses as saying.

"Many buildings had been affected in Lombok's main city of Mataram. Most of them had been built with weak construction materials," a spokesman for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency told news agency AFP.
