At least 50 people are feared dead after a passenger plane from Bangladesh’s US-Bangla Airlines with 71 passengers on board crash-landed at Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) at Kathmandu on Monday.
According to initial reports, the plane, a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 caught fire after it overshot on the runway and crashed into a football ground near the airport while landing at the TIA airport.
Passengers were being evacuated from the plane and fire fighters rushed to the spot to extinguish the fire.
Following the plane crash, authorities have closed the Tribhuvan International Airport.
According to local media reports, the 78-seater twin turbo prop aircraft S2-AGU took off from Dhaka for Kathmandu and crashed at 2:20 pm.
“Seventeen injured passengers have been rescued and sent to different hospitals for treatment,†the Kathmandu Post quoted Nepal Tourism Ministry Joint Secretary Suresh Acharya as saying.
