Strong earthquake of 6.7 magnitude jolts Greece, Turkey; 2 dead, over 200 injured

A 6.7 magnitude strong earthquake on Friday jolted the Dodecanese Islands in Greece and the Aegean coast of Turkey.  At least two people were killed and over 200 hundred were injured.

All the injured were shifted to hospital for treatment. News agency AFP reported that the state hospital in Bodrum was evacuated after cracks appeared, with incoming patients being examined in a garden outside.

The epicenter of the quake was approximately 10 kms south of the Turkey’s Bodrum and 16.2 kms east of the island of Kos in Greece. According to the US Geological Survey, it had a depth of 10 kms.

The earthquake led to a small tsunami in nearby Turkey but reportedly did not cause major damage. The European quake agency EMSC said a small tsunami could be caused by the quake, but Turkish broadcasters cited officials saying large waves were more likely.

The casualties occurred on the Greek island of Kos, a major tourist destination, the island's mayor said.
