An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck the city of New Plymouth in New Zealand, said the USGS as reported by news agency ANI. The earthquake was felt by residents as far as the South Island.
Residents across the capital Wellington and in the city of New Plymouth were rattled by the 207km-deep tremor. It was centred 25 km southwest of Taumarunui and described as strong, according to GeoNet.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed the earthquake south-west of Taumarunui and warned residents to keep an eye on updates.
