Ousted Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were provided “B” class facilities as they spent their first night in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, local media reports said on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday, the 68-year-old former Pakistani PM and his daughter Maryam were taken into custody by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) soon after their arrival at Lahore international airport from London.

The father-daughter duo was convicted in the Evenfield properties corruption case, and sentenced to 10 years and seven years in jail, respectively.

They were taken to Islamabad on a special chartered aircraft and then shifted to the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi in a separate vehicle.

A team of doctors, in the presence of Islamabad magistrate and senior police officials at Adiala jail, conducted the medical examination of Sharif and his daughter Maryam and declared them fit.

What are class ‘B’ prisoners?

Pakistani jails have three categories for prisoners - class A, B and C. The class A and B consist of prisoners who are educated and have a habit of a superior mode of living. They don’t do any hard labour in the jail but teach uneducated prisoners.

Unlike class C prisoners, the cells of Class A and B prisoners have one cot, one chair, one teapot, one lantern if there is no electric light, a shelf, and necessary washing and sanitary appliances.

For other facilities such as TV, air-conditioner, fridge, and newspapers, the expenses are usually paid by the prisoners with the prior permission of the jail authorities.
