First woman chief justice takes oath in Pakistan

Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar on Saturday has sworn-in as the first woman Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court. She is the first-ever female Chief Justice of any High Court in Pakistan.

Balochistan Governor Mohammad Khan Achakzai administered the oath of secrecy of Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar in a ceremony held at Governor House in Balochistan.

Justice Safdar replaced the incumbent Justice Muhammad Noor Meskanzai after his retirement from the office on August 31.

Justice Safdar is the 18^th Chief Justice of BHC and was the most senior judge of Balochistan High Court after former CJ Justice Muhammad Noor Meskanzai.

Justice Safdar will hold the office till October 5, 2019.

After attaining her law degree from Quetta University Law College in 1980, Justice Safdar took an oath as permanent judge on May 11, 2011.

Justice Safdar was appointed as an additional judge in the high court on September 7, 2009. After her appointment, she has heard 157 constitutional petitions.

Justice Safdar is one of the three special bench judges constituted for the high treason case against dictator General (retired) Pervez Musharraf.
