Queen Elizabeth II's husband, Prince Phillip is in hospital. He is being treated for an infection, according to royal officials who said he was 'in good spirits.'

Buckingham Palace told in a statement that King Edward VII Hospital in London late on Tuesday as a precaution “for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition."

King Edward VII is 96. His official title is Duke of Edinburgh.

Official state opening of parliament that will take place later on Wednesday will miss the Prince.

“Prince Philip is in good spirits and is disappointed to be missing the State Opening of Parliament and Royal Ascot,” the statement said.

The queen's confidante and companion of more than 70 years prepares to take permanent leave from his royal duties.
