New Delhi:

Barely 24-hours after Russian investigators had detained a couple on suspicion murdering a woman, eating her flesh, and taking selfies with her body parts, Russian police seem to have unearthed one of the country's most gruesome cases of cannibalism.

This development took place after pictures of dismembered bodies were found on a phone belonging to one of the main suspects, Russia's state media reported Monday. On the same day, the Investigative Committee in the southern Krasnodar region had arrested a 35-year-old man and his wife after a lost phone containing the photographs was handed over to police.

The phone was traced to the couple living in a hostel at a nearby military facility, where a raid uncovered body parts in a salt solution. A source in the law enforcement authorities said these included a jar containing a preserved hand.

In the kitchen, officers said they also found "bits of food and frozen pieces of meat of unknown origin. Investigators said they were giving the case top priority and would check information about the suspects' possible involvement in other crimes.

The couple is alleged to have murdered as many as 30 people since 1999 and consumed their flesh. Police have identified seven victims so far.

The couple has been identified as Dmitry Baksheev (35) and Natalia Baksheeva (42) and seven bags of body parts were allegedly found in their fridge and freezer.
