A strong earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude struck the jungle region of northern Peru today, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said. The epicentre was located 50 kilometres north of the city of Moyobamba at a depth of 114 kilometres. It occurred at 1008 GMT, the monitor said. There were no immediate reports of any damage or casualties.
According to the USGS map, the quake epicentre is located on the eastern slope of the Andes, where the mountain range meets the Amazon rainforest.
