A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake has struck off Fiji but there was no threat of a tsunami, US seismologists said.

The offshore quake hit at 9:28 am (local time) and was centred around 100 km northeast of Ndoi Island, Fiji, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said on its website.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsunami threat.
