US President Donald Trump on Sunday admitted that his son Donald Jr met with a Russian lawyer in 2016 “to get information on an opponent” but said it was completely legal.
This is the first time Trump has confessed the motive behind the June 2016 meeting, and he himself acknowledged the fact that it was to know more about Hillary Clinton, his direct Democratic rival for the presidency.
However, Trump, like he has in the past, insisted that he did not know anything about the meeting between his son Donald Jr and Natalia Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer, at that time.

“This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere. I did not know about it!”
Special Counsel Robert Mueller has criticised the meeting and is now investigating whether the members of the Trump camp tried to fabricate the 2016 election in the Republican’s favour.
As per reports, Trump has been thinking about whether he will get into legal peril because of the meeting between his son and Veselnitskaya.
Donald Jr, initially had said in a statement that the meeting was about American adoptions of Russian children. However, reports stated that the US president dictated the statement.

But later, Jr confessed that the meeting was to obtain damaging information on Clinton, but nothing concrete came out of it.
Trump’s lawyer argue that the meeting violated no laws.
“The question is how will it be illegal? The real question here is, would ... the meeting itself constitute a violation of the law,” Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.”’
