Presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said that he would name his vice presidential running mate in the next three-four days.
“I will make my mind up over the next three to four days. In my mind, I have someone that would be really good,” Trump told The Washington Post in an interview Monday, adding that his short list of candidates includes five people including a general.
But he quickly noted that he is more inclined towards a political person. “I do like the military, but I do very much like the political,” he said.
Rtd Lt Gen Michael T Flynn is being speculated as the one military commander in his short list of running mates.
The others being said to be in his list are Newt Gingrich, former House Speaker and Governor Chris Christie from New Jersey. Indiana Governor Mike Pence is also said to be in his short-list. According to the daily, Trump said he was prizing political experience over military experience for two main reasons.
First, he feels as though he doesn’t need much help on the military/national security front. “I have such great respect for the general, but believe it or not that will be one of my strong suits. I was against the war in Iraq from the start,” he added.
Secondly, Trump sees picking a politician as vice president as the best way to unify the Republican party ahead of next week’s National Convention. The Republican convention is scheduled next week from July 18-21. Trump’s Democratic rival Hillary Clinton is also expected to announce her vice presidential running mate soon.
The Democratic convention is scheduled to be held in Pennsylvania July 25-28.
