US First Lady Melania Trump has undergone surgery to treat a "benign kidney condition" and was expected to remain hospitalised for the rest of the week, the White House said on Tuesday.

An 'embolization procedure' was successfully carried out on the First Lady to treat a benign kidney condition on Tuesday, according to the White House.

"The procedure was successful and there were no complications," Melania's spokesperson said as quoted by the PTI.

The First Lady was treated at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre where she underwent the surgery.

President Donald Trump flew to Walter Reed to visit Melania and tweeted about his wife's well-being minutes before arriving outside the medical centre.

"Heading over to Walter Reed Medical Center to see our great First Lady, Melania. Successful procedure, she is in good spirits. Thank you to all of the well-wishers," Trump tweeted.

"The First Lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere," the White House said.

Vice President Mike Pence described the embolization process as 'long planned' while addressing an event celebrating Israel's independence on Monday. "Melania is already on the mend," AP quoted Pence.

Melania, who is a former model from Slovenia, is Trump’s third wife and has been married to him for 13 years. They are parents to a 12-year-old son named Barron.

The couple was hitting headlines in the recent months after Trump has been accused of paying $130,000 to a porn star in hush money to keep quiet about the allegation of doing sex with her in 2006.

Although, Trump had acknowledged the payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, he denied Daniels' allegations. Earlier in 2016, a former Playboy model had come up with her allegations of a 10-month affair with the president. Trump also denied the allegations made by American model and actress Karen McDougal.
